As the largest consumer of ivory with an estimated 70% of ivory being sold on China’s black market, this recent announcement could be a ‘turning point’ for elephants.
“To better protect elephants and better tackle the illegal trade … China will gradually stop the processing and sale of ivory for commercial purposes.”
The ban will affect 34 processing enterprises and 143 designated trading venues.
We are encouraged by China’s leadership in helping end the slaughter of elephants. It is our hope that other countries will now follow suit, including the UK, to end all ivory sales.
