Zimbabwe: Poaching arrests result in stiff jail sentences

January 16th 2017:

Over 480 poachers have been arrested across Zimbabwe throughout 2016, up from 378 in 2015. Of those arrested, 57 were sentenced to 9-year jail sentences.

Although this news is encouraging, the recent announcement from Zimbabwe in transporting wild elephant calves to a number of zoos globally – to ‘support conservation’ – is disheartening.
